Zimbabwe recorded a decline in chicken production. The decline percentage was affected by several significant factors.
Zimbabwe's poultry industry recorded a decline in production by 19%. Industry players indicated that the main factor is the increase in the cost of feeding, as well as a decrease in supply and demand.
A report compiled by the Livestock and Meat Advisory Council (Lmac) indicates that in 2019, farmers produced an average of 70 million day-old chickens, compared with 86 million produced in the previous year.
A chicken from Cuba laid the largest egg in the world. It weighed about 150 kilograms.
In 2017, production averaged 65 million, while in 2016 it amounted to 67 million.
“The year began solidly, but the impact of livestock feed costs in industry is most noticeable in August. The production of one-day-old chickens fell sharply, recovering only slightly, before falling again in December to a minimum of four million chickens produced, ”excerpt from the report.
Reduction of corn stocks, combined with restrictions on the purchase of corn from farmers due to the adoption of Statute 145 of 2019. This is one of the challenges to the viability of the sector. In its report for the third quarter, Lmac indicated that without exaggerating purchasing power, profits from poultry production will continue to decline.
It said that a decrease in margin had already led to lower producer prices for day-old chickens, broiler meat and table eggs than the prevailing prices in neighboring countries in dollar terms. This prompted some breeders and farmers to explore export markets.
According to Lmak, the depreciation of the Zimbabwean dollar against the US dollar in the third quarter of 2019 continued to put pressure on prices, feed and daily chickens, which were not accompanied by an increase in disposable income of consumers.
