“The yellow mustard began to thicken after the harvest,” said Walter Dyck of Olds Products. Winnipeg, (MarketsFarm): In Western Canada, rates for yellow mustard remain solid, which should stimulate hectares this spring.
Prices for brown plants were also strong and steady after the harvest, but retreated slightly after data came out that brown mustard was larger than expected, according to Dyke.
Opinions about where the mustard was first grown vary. Some scholars claim that it appeared on the territory of Ancient Afghanistan between 5500 and 2300 BC. Others consider China and East India to be the birthplace of this plant.
“The signal is that some hectares can be used for yellow varieties this year,” said Dyke. Although he added that "the market definitely says that we have enough brown varieties."
Although yellow mustard prices may be somewhat encouraging, Dyke said that raising prices above current levels is unlikely because the United States had a good harvest, despite some problems with the North Dakota crop.
In 2019/20, about 160 thousand hectares of mustard were sown in Canada, from which 135,000 tons were harvested, according to data from Canada's agriculture and agri-food industry. Early estimates for 2020/21 predict a slight increase in area and yield, resulting in a total production of 145,000 tons. Dyke agreed that the total number of hectares of mustard per year is likely to be about the same, with a switch to a large proportion of yellow varieties instead of brown ones.
