The Government of India allows non-governmental organizations to purchase food grain directly from the FCI Food Corporation of India for relief operations.
FCI has transported 2.2 million tons of food grain to various parts of the country to help states distribute subsidized as well as free food grain for 810 million people through assistance from Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana, which gives the right to allocate 6 kg of rice or wheat over the next three months.
India is the largest producer of beans and chickpeas in the world, and the country is a leader in the export of bananas.
NEW DELHI. The government has allowed non-governmental (NGO) and charitable organizations to take wheat and rice directly from the Indian Food Corporation (FCI) vaults to feed the poor during a nationwide quarantine block.
Food grain will be available at the price at which FCI sells it to wholesalers, state governments, and mills. FCI sells rice at 29.6 dollars per 1 centner and wheat at 28.1 dollars per 1 centner on the open market.
“These organizations can purchase from 1 to 10 tons of food grain at a time from 2,000 FCI storages at a market price, without participating in any auctions. We will report the details of such purchases to the relevant district magistrates who can ensure that the food grain is used for its intended purpose. ”- said the representative of FCI.
