The 2020 budget proposed by the President of the United States provides for a 15% reduction in spending on the US Department of Agriculture while maintaining funding for crop insurance and increasing funding for the Commodity Credit Corporation.
The U.S. National Farmers Union (NFU) said the budget proposed by President Donald Trump is expected to cut spending on the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other federal agencies to increase spending on the border with Mexico and defense programs.
Thus, according to NFU President Roger Johnson, Trump's budget proposal continues the alarming budgetary trend of neglecting the interests of farming families. Johnson noted that there is a very clear mismatch between President Trump's priorities and the economic realities faced by family farmers, ranchers and rural communities. The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, speaking in defense of the document, said that while agriculture is still struggling, the U.S. will maintain a security system for farmers, ranchers, foresters, growers, and families who need food assistance.
