About 700 hectares without gourds are allotted for berry growing in the Kherson region. Data on the region was provided by the deputy director of the regional department of agro-industrial development Andrei Nedelko.
Most of the plantations are blackberries and strawberries. In addition, figs, raspberries, and a small number of exotic crops, such as pawpaw, or banana tree, and goji berries are grown in the region’s berries.
According to the Department of Agro-Industrial Development of the Kherson region, the yield of berries amounted to 4.9 thousand tons. According to the forecasts of relevant experts, this year due to mild weather in winter, as well as an increase in the number of greenhouses and areas under drip irrigation, the yield of berries will be greater.Farmers hope that they will be able to collect up to 5 thousand tons of berries, which is 30% more than last year. For information, raspberries are the most popular berry among organic producers.
Of the hundreds of Ukrainian producers of organic berries, 51 are engaged in raspberry cultivation on a total area of more than 280 hectares. 19 farmers grow strawberries on 25 hectares.Blueberries are cultivated on 10 farms on an area of 25 ha. Another 6 organic farms are engaged in growing currants and blackberries on 5 and 15 ha, respectively.
