This will help preserve yields.
The botany science journal Frontiers in Plant Science has published a study by American scientists at the University of Florida's Institute of Nutrition and Agriculture. Scientists set out to develop a rice variety that is more resistant to heat than all existing at the moment.
Rice grows, usually in the tropical and subtropical strip. But just in hot weather, he suffers the most. Because of this, in fact, rice fields are flooded with water to protect the crops from exposure to the sun.
Rice is a strategically very important culture; it is the most popular product in the world. Rice can damage temperatures above 32 ° C, this is the conclusion made by American scientists, having studied plantations in different parts of the world.
And they managed to find DNA markers associated with heat resistance. They will help to develop a new variety of rice. The Americans studied a crossed rice variety obtained from two varieties - Indian “Nagina 22” and Filipino “IP64”. Indian has very high growth rates, including at high air temperatures. But it does not have the best taste, unlike the IP64, which was brought out by scientists of the Philippine International Rice Research Institute.
At the moment, the task of American scientists using the created DNA markers is to select the Nagina 22 genes that are responsible for thermal tolerance and combine them with other IP64 properties in the new rice variety. Recall that in Ukraine, rice plantations are located in three areas - Odessa, Nikolaev and Kherson.
