According to statistics, the UAE imports 80% of food, which is a serious problem for the country's food security. To rectify the situation, steps are being taken to restructure the food supply chain. Vertical farming, the practice of growing local fruits and vegetables with minimal resources, is currently gaining momentum.
«Vertical farming - This is the future of sustainable agriculture in the UAE. We import a huge amount of goods, and we need to find ways to not only become more sustainable, but also more self-sufficient, satisfying local demand through local production, ”said Mustafa Moise, managing director of Uns Farms, a local indoor hydroponic farm growing fresh, produced leafy greens in the country without chemicals and preservatives.
In air-conditioned greenhouses in the UAE, several crops of tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes are harvested per year. Apples, mangoes, and strawberries are grown from berries and fruits. Also, the country is famous for dates.
“We can offer a wide range of kale, various types of lettuce and basil leaves for 30-40% cheaper than the cost of imported products. As soon as the plant with an area of about 10 thousand square meters reaches its full capacity, we will produce about 1.5 tons per day and, therefore, will satisfy the growing demand in the country, ”Moiz added.
- Dubai: as temperatures soar to the highs of the 40s, local dairy farms are back at work to protect their cattle from desert heat like a blast furnace. Extreme heat and humidity can be dangerous for dairy cows, reducing milk production and threatening their health and ability to endure calves.
