Ground grass is considered an elite among all grass coverings. Previously, it was organized around palaces and castles. Only a wealthy aristocracy could afford such a luxury. Now it has become an attribute of landscape design of park and garden areas of a regular or landscape style.
What is ground grass
Parterre lawn is a dense grass covering with a height of not more than 3.5–4 cm of a beautiful emerald color. In this case, deviation along the length of the blade of grass and color is unacceptable. Color must be uniform bright green. Such a grassy decorative coating will decorate any houses built in the classical style, administration buildings, offices and large stores. It is worth noting that now it is quite laborious in arranging and further care.
When using this lawn in landscape design, it is worth noting that it should be an order of magnitude larger than other elements for decoration (flower beds, alpine slides, etc.). To create such a coating, herbaceous plants must be perennials of small length, but of good density and have a uniform structure and a rich green color. The composition of the herbal mixture usually includes the seeds of narrow-leaved cereal grasses (fescue, bluegrass and slender field). Due to the high requirements for the height of such a coating, a haircut is carried out in the warm period at least 2 times a week. In this case, all mowed grass should be removed.
In order for such a lawn covering to have an impeccable “English” look, it is forbidden to stomp on it, you must also arrange for thorough care. Moreover, preparing a site for planting requires a lot of labor, since with poor preparation on the surface of a short-cut grass all bumps and pits will be visible. Therefore, the ground grass is not only the most beautiful and sophisticated, but also very demanding and moody when leaving and arranging. In the winter, it can freeze during severe frosts, and in the summer it can dry out from the hot rays of the sun.
Did you know? There is landscape therapy - a combination of walking in the fresh air with contemplation of the beauty of nature. When considering the green color of plants, a person feels closer to nature, which has a beneficial effect on the nervous system and mood.
The best herbs and mixtures for green stalls
The following plant crops are used to equip such a lawn:
- Red fescue. The bright greenery of this grass persists even in drought. This plant loves loamy soils with a weak alkaline reaction. It responds well to organic fertilizing. The roots go 75-120 cm deep into the ground with heavy watering. 2 years after planting, the fescue forms a strong turf.
- Thin polevole. It emerges very quickly (within a week after sowing). It prefers chernozems and meadow soil (pH 6.5). It has a powerful root system that grows very quickly in width. It retains its juicy greens until frost in the second half of autumn.
- Bluegrass meadow. Kidney-shaped roots give a lot of shoots with tips that bend, forming a thick coating. It grows and grows slowly enough. Great for perennial and regularly trimmed grass. Needs regular watering. Prefers loamy soil with a pH of up to 7.5.
When organizing a ground grass, you should use grass mixtures of 2-3 varieties of herbs that are identical in structure. For light shade and alkaline soil, you can use a mixture of red fescue and meadow bluegrass. For soil with an acid reaction, red fescue and potted polevole are better suited.
Experts recommend the following mixture of herbs for growing stalls: 40% each of the bluegrass and meadow, 20% red fescue. To equip such grass cover for different soils, a grass mixture in equal proportions of bluegrass and red fescue is recommended. If the soil is characterized by low fertility, then the following proportions are maintained: 70% of red fescue and 30% of meadow bluegrass.
Important! Pasture ryegrass and meadow fescue are not suitable for arranging ground grass. These grasses form voids that will be clearly visible on a short mowed lawn.
Growing conditions
To get a beautiful ground grass, you need to organize proper care for it and create all conditions for growth. First of all, you need to choose a site where there is no increased humidity and shading. It should be well lit by the sun. Therefore, there should be no sprawling tall trees and other sources of shade. To avoid moisture accumulation, you need to choose a site with a slight slope or organize a drainage system. Then all weed should be removed. Be sure to make sure that the surface of the site is flat.
If it is not possible to create the necessary conditions for the stalls, then you can plant a less whimsical ordinary or Moorish lawn.
Technology and stages of creating ground grass
When arranging this type of grass cover, it is necessary to carefully carry out preliminary work, and only then sow the grass mixture.
Important! For tamping the soil before planting, you need to choose a dry day. Sowing itself should be carried out in calm weather without gusts of wind.
To create a beautiful ground lawn you need:
- Dig the soil and remove weed grass. Herbicides can be used.
- Check the soil composition under laboratory conditions. The lack of nutrients will need to be filled with the necessary fertilizers. You can pour the already prepared soil mixture with a layer of at least 30 cm. If the soil is sandy, then add black earth, and sand is added to heavy soil.
- Make the leveling of the soil, and fertilize.
- If the site is not sloping and water stagnation is possible, it is necessary to equip the drainage with sand, gravel or gravel.
- It is necessary to ride for leveling the landing area with a heavy roller (100–150 kg). If the plot is small, then you can move a wide board to jump on it. After 7 days, add soil to the places of subsidence.
- Sow grass mixtures. The process itself is best done in the spring. In this case, seeds of different parameters are planted separately. Larger at first, and then smaller. In this case, sand is mixed with seeds in a ratio of 1 to 3. Then, such a mixture is scattered along and across the area under sowing. Seeds are laid in the ground with a garden rake and rammed with an ice rink.
- Conduct abundant watering every day for at least 6 months until the turf is obtained.
Humidification should be carried out in the evening. At least 10 liters of water should go out per 1 m². For watering, you need to apply the sprinkling method. You can equip such a lawn cover by planting grass rhizomes according to the 5 × 5 cm pattern. This method will be more labor intensive, but the lawn will turn out to be more uniform. You can also equip the lawn by using the finished turf, which was grown in advance.
It is cut into sheets 30 × 40 cm in height 4 cm and placed on the site tightly to each other. Then they roll in a roller for leveling and watered abundantly. Gaps between such canvases are sprinkled with nutritious soil mixture.
Necessary lawn care
Ground grass will require good care. In general, the necessary activities can be placed on the following list:
- aeration (piercing with a pitchfork) in the spring or with a noticeable compaction of the soil;
- annual mulching of the soil in summer;
- regular garbage collection;
- frequent watering;
- trimming the edges - they should always look neat;
- fertilizing in spring and autumn;
- weed, pest and disease control;
- if necessary - leveling the lawn;
- planting voids;
- regular haircut.
In autumn, the grass is allowed to grow so that it tolerates the cold well. In winter, you should refrain from walking on the wintering cover, since under the trodden ice path the plants will die, and in the spring you will find bald spots. If these conditions are met, within three years after planting, you will form a real English lawn that will last several decades and will look perfect. An automated irrigation system, a lawn mower and the use of slow-growing varieties of herbs will help ease lawn care.
Did you know? Grounds with sections of the correct form are inherent in the regular style in park art. They were unusually popular in the XVII – XVIII centuries in Western Europe.
